DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
In the Dominican Republic, where hurricanes, storms and floods can be frequent, a lack of access to water and sanitation is compounded by the vulnerabilities resulting from climate change.
With only 45% of households having access to clean water, the need to increase access, stabilize aging infrastructure and build in climate resilience is critical for this island nation. Prioritizing water in the national budget was a key feature of their compact.
HIGHLIGHTS
Assessment of water and sanitation services: Access coverage, service quality, infrastructure, finance, regulation and sector policy
Creation of a legal framework for water: Revision and approval of the Water Law and the Drinking Water and Sanitation Law
Risk management, water storage and maintenance of infrastructure and irrigation systems
Protection, conservation and restoration of river basins
In the first year of the compact, water was prioritized in the national budget with a 60% increase and it has been maintained ever since.
