Nigeria
Original order: November 2019
Signed: H.E. Muhammadu Buhari, President
In 2019, Nigeria's president signed an executive order to prioritize ending open defecation in Nigeria by 2025. High levels of open defecation were contributing to a range of public health problems, including waterborne diseases like cholera and diarrhea. The Executive Order created the “Clean Nigeria: Use the Toilet" campaign, marking the beginning of a national drive to be open-defecation free. In 2025, the President formally extended the Executive Order to 2030 following the development of a costed National Sanitation Master Plan by the Ministry.
